REGISTRY INFORMATION

New Registration Requirements on Import Animals

A recent CSA Board of Directors decision has resulted in policy that it is the responsibility of the importer/purchaser to provide documentation to prove the animal meets the requirements of the CSA herd book. This documentation must include the official Simmental Fraction (e.g. 28/32, 30/32, 32/32) and applies to all imported animals. In particular, producers purchasing bulls from the United States should be aware of the differences that exist between Canada and the United States in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status. The Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 30/32 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 28/32 Simmental as purebred. It is the responsibility of the importer/purchaser to ensure that the bulls meet the requirement of being 30/32 Simmental if they wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred. Please refer to the CSA upgrading table on page 34 of the March 2008 issue of the Simmental Country or view it on the web at www.simmental.com.

Credit Card Authorization
Please contact the CSA office if the particulars pertaining to your credit card have changed (e.g. card number, expiry date, etc.). This will allow your registration and transfer papers to be printed and mailed without being delayed.

CSA Embryo Procedures

  1. Ensure that you have entered the Embryo calf into our Herdbook (via your Online system). ** If you’re not an Online User – skip to Step 2.  Important calf entry-note: The embryo “entry box” should be answered as Y-es. That way it allows you to enter the Tag (the - Complete Tattoo: if the recip is a registered Simmental dam), the Birth Year (BYR), and the Breed Make-up (e.g. if Simmental: SMSMSMSM, if Angus/cross: ANANXXXX
  2. Print-off a “THE Embryo Data & Registration Form” from the Downloads-section of our Simmental website www.simmental.com
  3. Complete the form, separating the embryo calves by “flush”. Since our embryo Bylaw states that only 1 embryo from each flush must be Parentage Verified (PV) – you must indicate “Y” in the DNA box for the embryo you wish to take a hair sample from. Then, we can order the parentage kit and provide you with the required Application Form and sample envelopes.
  4. Lastly, when returning the “THE Embryo Data & Registration Form” you must send copies of the Embryo Transplant Forms. It helps if you write the tattoo of the resultant embryo beside the appropriate Recip Dam on the form (as it helps us manually track the embryo activity for that particular Flush).

ALBERTA SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING
The Alberta Simmental Association Annual Meeting will be held in Red Deer, AB, May 31st. Very Important: A vote will be taken at our May 31st Annual Meeting on the proposed Alberta Simmental Association Provincial Administration fee. This would replace any annual membership to the Alberta Simmental Association and is subject to approval of the 2007 Canadian Simmental Association’s by-lay changes. The Alberta membership will need approval of 3/4 of the members in attendance at the May 31st meeting. Questions can be forwarded to your directors. Check the Alberta Simmental Website for updates and contact information. www.albertasimmental.com

COW DNA PROGRAM
CSA is pursuing a DNA collection strategy for the cowherd to establish a baseline DNA data set.

From now to December 31, 2008 CSA members are encouraged to collect and submit samples from Simmental cows registered in the CSA herd book. Here are some details:
  • Helps maintain the integrity of the Canadian Simmental Herd book
  • Supports ongoing Research and Development
  • CSA will fund the cost of extracting DNA from these registered Simmental cows to be put on file
  • CSA will fund a portion of the cost of parentage verification of replacement heifers in 2009 whose dams have samples on file
  • This program is completely voluntary to CSA members
  • Members are strongly encouraged to pull DNA samples on all cows where DNA does not already exist on file
  • It is as simple as collecting hair samples, putting each sample in a separate, well identified envelope and submitting them to the lab

For further details, please contact the CSA office
