REGISTRY INFORMATION

Registration Processing / Department

We have been entering 2008 calving information steadily but have noticed that some breeders are still sending in their information. If you have weaned your 2008 calf crop, you might want to include your weaning information at the same time. You may attach a separate list (in tattoo order) indicating both the weaning date & weaning weight for each animal. Or, if you are not registering/transferring the 2008-born animals – you could write the weigh date and weight in the Transfer area of the form.

** Note: Please ensure you complete all relevant entry boxes on the Calving Data sheet so that your herd data/processing is not delayed.

Heifers: If there are any females that you wish to register, please ensure that you mark a “Y” or “R” in the CERT box and provide a Name for the animal (25 character maximum).

Bulls: If there are also yearling weights to be submitted, please avoid asking for a registration paper on them so that you save yourself the Duplicate Certificate fee ($5.25) (e.g. if the bull remains in your ownership name after yearling has been submitted).

COW DNA PROGRAM
CSA is pursuing a DNA collection strategy for the cowherd to establish a baseline DNA data set.

From now to December 31, 2008 CSA members are encouraged to collect and submit samples from Simmental cows registered in the CSA herd book. Here are some details:
  • Helps maintain the integrity of the Canadian Simmental Herd book
  • Supports ongoing Research and Development
  • CSA will fund the cost of extracting DNA from these registered Simmental cows to be put on file
  • CSA will fund a portion of the cost of parentage verification of replacement heifers in 2009 whose dams have samples on file
  • This program is completely voluntary to CSA members
  • Members are strongly encouraged to pull DNA samples on all cows where DNA does not already exist on file
  • It is as simple as collecting hair samples, putting each sample in a separate, well identified envelope and submitting them to the lab

For further details, please contact the CSA office
