Further information to follow.  As you plan your trip, please take a look at the attached, as it outlines some other activities you may want to take advantage of while you are in Sun Peaks (please note this is the 2008 calendar of events however it will be similar for 2009).   More details regarding the AGM will be available soon.

BREED IMPROVEMENT INFORMATION

Please note the following breed improvement information:

Legacy Sires:  The CSA is currently compiling a list of sires that have had significant influence in the breed. These influential sires may be used in the progeny test program and breeding programs designed to support the Garth Sweet Foundation research project. A list of sires will be published shortly. If you have any semen in your tanks that you may wish to donate to the Foundation please watch for the list in the next few weeks. A minimum number of straws may be required.

Cow Herd DNA Program: The program ends April 30th. Samples must be received by the lab no later than May 31st, 2009. Members are reminded that CSA will pay for the DNA extraction and storage on the cow, and the DNA genotype panel on the cow for 2009 born heifers. The member is responsible for the cost of DNA parentage on the heifer should they choose to parent verify the replacement heifers. This cost sharing program provides both a research data set for Simmental breeders, but more importantly it provides an opportunity for breeders to move towards a fully parentage verified cowherd. This in turn can provide marketing opportunities, enhance the quality of genetic evaluation for those member herds and enable the use of multiple sire pastures and/or reduced time intervals from AI to natural breeding. In many cases the increase in conception rate and improvements to pasture management will more than compensate for the cost of parentage verification moving forward.

REGISTRY INFORMATION
Genetic Evaluation Deadline for Total Herd Enrollment (THE) herds:
In order for data to be included in CSA genetic EPD evaluations, it must be received by the CSA office no later than JUNE 1st for the Fall Evaluation and NOVEMBER 1st for the Spring Evaluation!!!.

Spring Calving Season - Calving Data Reminder:
With the end of Spring calving season, now’s the time to complete your calving data. THE participants are encouraged to submit data on their entire calf crop. Herds with multiple ownership, or herds which are operated as a single unit, should submit calving information on all animals together under a single or master herd number. This does NOT affect ownership or registration requirements, however it does ensure that calves are handled correctly in the genetic evaluation and that proper credit is given to the animal’s genetic merit..

Reminder on Transferring Bulls:
The Simmental breed has once again experienced another strong and successful spring bull sale season! The CSA would like to remind you of the importance of transferring your bulls. A registration paper is an excellent promotional tool for Simmental genetics, plus transfers on all animals sold for breeding purposes makes statistics more accurate.

CSA Fee Schedule Updates – Lab Charges (Effective May 1, 2009)
DNA(Electronic Transfer)………………...... $27.00
DNA (non-electronic)………………….....… $45.00
DNA (from bone, tissue or meat sample). $105.00

Coat Color………………………………...… $30.00
Freemartin………………………………….. $30.00
Polled (per linked sample) …………….… $70.00
Karyotype……………………………….…... $135.00
Reconstructed genotype…………..…..….. $55.00
“ (+ $27 per additional genotype).

CSA Embryo Procedures:
1) Ensure that you have entered the Embryo calf into our Herdbook (via your Online system). ** If you’re not an Online User – skip to Step 2.

Important calf entry-note: The embryo “entry box” should be answered as Y-es. That way it allows you to enter the Tag (the - Complete Tattoo: if the recip is a registered Simmental dam), the Birth Year (BYR), and the Breed Make-up (e.g. if Simmental: SMSMSMSM, if Angus/cross: ANANXXXX)

2) Print-off a “THE Embryo Data & Registration Form” from the Downloads-section of our Simmental website www.simmental.com

3) Complete the form, separating the embryo calves by “flush”. Since our embryo Bylaw states that only 1 embryo from each flush must be Parentage Verified (PV) – you must indicate “Y” in the DNA box for the embryo you wish to take a hair sample from. Then, we can order the parentage kit and provide you with the required Application Form and sample envelopes.

4) Lastly, when returning the “THE Embryo Data & Registration Form” you must send copies of the Embryo Transplant Forms. It helps if you write the tattoo of the resultant embryo beside the appropriate Recip Dam on the form (as it helps us manually track the embryo activity for that particular Flush).
