CSA IMPORTANT NOTICE
The Canadian Simmental Association operates under by-laws which are voted on and accepted by our general membership, they are then approved by the Minister of Agriculture under the power of the Federal Government's Animal Pedigree Act. All livestock Breed Associations in Canada are governed and protected by the Animal Pedigree Act which is in place to ensure genetic improvement and to promote Canadian genetics as the best in the world. The purebred beef cattle sector in Canada is fortunate to operate under a piece of legislation that ensures our livelihood has controls and systems that help to add value and sustainability to the industry.

It is the responsibility of each person producing and marketing Simmental cattle in Canada to ensure that the by-laws of the Canadian Simmental Association are adhered to and that all Simmental cattle sold in Canada are registered by the Canadian Simmental Association at the time of sale.

Genetic Evaluation Deadline for Total Herd Enrollment (THE) Herds:
In order for data to be included in CSA genetic EPD evaluations, it must be received by the CSA office no later than JUNE 1st for the Fall Evaluation and NOVEMBER 1st for the Spring Evaluation!!!

IMPORTANT: Embryo Data Submissions to the CSA Office

Update
A recent software modification to our Registry System now requires members to provide the registration number & tattoo for Recip dams that are registered in the CSA herd book. Members will notice this addition to the “Registration Embryos” web page as well as when completing the T.H.E Embryo Data and Registration Form.

Notes:
We are also noticing when completing the T.H.E Embryo Data and Registration Form, many members are using the ‘Breeding date’ indicated in the top right area of the ET Recovery Form - rather than the date the Recip Dam was ‘Transplanted’ with the embryo.

In addition, when filling in the entry-box on the registration form to indicate the Flush Date, members you should be using the ‘Recovery Date’ that is indicated in the top right area of the ET Recovery Form.

Thanks very much for your attention to these important Registry items.

BREED IMPROVEMENT
Percentile Ranks
As part of continuing efforts to enhance the information provided from Simmental data, the Simmental search site has recently been upgraded to include percentile rank graphs for all of the reported EPD traits. These graphs provide an immediate picture of where the animal fits in the Simmental population for a specific trait. For more details visit: http://search.simmental.com

Ultrasound
Reminder – The ultrasound rebate program ends June 30, 2012. The rebate credits your CSA member account $10 for scans that index (are useful for evaluation). Technicians book up quickly so plan ahead.

Genetic Evaluation
The next genetic evaluation is rapidly approaching. Members are reminded that data must be received by the CSA office no later than November 1st to guarantee inclusion in the EPD run.

CSA GENOMIC INNOVATIONS RESEARCH PROJECT
The first group of feeder cattle went on trial in late July at the University of Guelph’s Elora Beef Research Facility. The 144 Simmental-influenced steers were sourced from Alberta and will be harvested in November. Individual feed intake data is being collected in order to establish efficiency values for each animal. The second group of feeder cattle targeted to weigh 750 lbs is currently being sourced and will enter the research facilities in late November.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the requests for DNA samples on influential animals and potential feeder cattle for upcoming fills at the University of Guelph. We greatly appreciate the large number of responses we received. For more information please contact Bruce Holmquist at (403) 988-8676 or bholmquist@simmental.com.
