Invitation to Attend
Dear Breeders,
Australia will
host the World Simmental Congress in Melbourne in
September 2010. I would like to take this
opportunity to invite you, your partner, friends and
industry colleagues to attend the 2010 Simmental
World Congress.
Many international and
Australian delegates are expected to attend this
important event to increase their knowledge of
Simmental cattle and the Australian beef cattle
industry. The Congress and the pre and post Congress
tours will include a range of activities to inform
and entertain delegates. It will also cover
topics on innovations in cattle genetics, stud and
commercial herd breeding, product quality,
management technology and marketing.
The
Congress will be held in conjunction with the
Simmental Feature Breed Judging at Royal Melbourne
Show. A special Congress feature will be an
International Young People’s Program.
We
invite you to enjoy the Welcome Reception,
interactive networking sessions, a Congress dinner,
a themed Australian farewell dinner, partners
program during the Congress and other tour events.

BREED IMPROVEMENT
|
It’s not too late..
Slightly later calving cow herds still
have the opportunity to collect ultrasound information on
their cattle. Ultrasound is highly correlated with resulting
carcass information. While many bulls have successfully exited
the yard of Simmental breeders this spring, there may still be
opportunity to ultrasound replacement heifers. This results in
a carcass evaluation on the sire and dam of the calf, but also
a record on incoming females. Calves can be scanned up to 440
days of age, so calves born the first of April last year, can
be scanned in groups up to June 15, 2010. The CSA offers a
rebate of $10 for all scans collected in valid contemporary
groups. This is also a good time, as technicians are typically
less busy than during peak bull sale season.
Genetic Evaluation
Data for the Fall 2010 genetic
evaluation will be sent to AGI in June. If you wish to receive
up to date EPD on your 2010 calf crop, and 2009 yearlings
please ensure that your information is entered online, or
submitted to the office prior to JUNE 1st. Data from herds
participating on THE will be sent for the genetic evaluation.
Scrotal Data:
The fall evaluation is also when CSA conducts its scrotal EPD
evaluation. If you have scrotal information on your bulls from
this spring, please ensure that you submit it to the CSA for
inclusion in the evaluation.
Heifer Pregnancy
The CSA is actively working on
collection of breeding heifer success rate. Breeders are
encouraged to record tattoos/tags of all heifers (registered
and unregistered) that are exposed over the summer and the
resulting preg test results. These heifers will be recorded on
the Spring 2011 THE enrolment forms. There is no charge for
this data, only heifers that are subsequently enrolled in THE
will be subject to the $20 fee. Heifer pregnancy rate is
one of the first indicators of female fertility, which is a
key driver of customer profits. |

REGISTRY INFORMATION |
Identification
and Registration of Tattoo Letters:
Each person who wishes to register animals in the Canadian Simmental
Association Herd Book must apply to the Association for, and
be allotted, tattoo letters.
Tattoo letters are a
unique combination of three (3) or four (4) letters allotted
to a person by the Association for that person’s exclusive use
in identifying tattooing and registering animals with the
Association.
All animals must be identified with an ear
tattoo in order to be eligible for registration in the Herd
Books as follows: a) All calves born in Canada must be
identified by an ear tattoo before the animal is six (6)
months of age, and b) All imported animals must be
identified by an ear tattoo using the Canadian owner’s tattoo
letters or such other letters as may be required by the
Association.
An ear tattoo is a unique combination of
tattoo letters, followed by a number of up to 4 digits to
identify the animal, followed by a year letter. The first
number in a tattoo cannot be a zero (0).
No two (2)
animals, regardless of sex, may have the same ear tattoo
within a 22 year cycle of the year letters.
