Date Reminders: It is yearling weight and ultrasound season for many, and weaning season for some. In the midst of calving, and marketing members are reminded of the date ranges that are used for inclusion of data in the THE program and genetic evaluation. The following date table can assist in determining ideal dates for data collection (weather permitting):

To use the table:

Example: Weaning Date

Select the Birthdate of your earliest calf

January 1

Last Day represents the latest you can collect data for inclusion in genetic evaluation

September 8

Select the Birthdate of your last calf

April 1

First Day represents the earliest you can collect data for inclusion in genetic evaluation

September 8

For maximum data inclusion try to select measurement dates between the first and last day

Optimal Weaning Date - September 8th

If First Day is after Last Day, then you may need to collect data on more than one date

Ultrasound and Carcass: The CSA ultrasound rebate program is still in effect. Data collected in valid contemporary groups, using a UGC certified technicians and labs is eligible for the rebate. Producers interested in scanning calves aged 320 to 430 days are encouraged to contact a UGC certified ultrasound technician. A complete list of certified technicians can be found at www.ultrasoundbeef.org. Producers who are feeding out calves and are interested in collecting carcass data are encouraged to contact the CSA directly.

Cow Herd DNA Project Deadline Extended: Due to inclement weather across the entire country this winter the CSA has extended the cow herd DNA program to April 30th, 2009. Contact the CSA office for forms. All samples must be submitted to GenServe Laboratories no later than May 31st, 2009. The DNA project allows members to move onto SNP based parentage testing which is lower cost than the current microsatellite technology. As well, it provides a level of insurance should a calf need to be parent verified and its’ mother is deceased. Further the program allows for participation in CSA research and development through various projects.

REGISTRY INFORMATION

2009 Herd Letter is "W"
The beginning of 2009 brings with it a new calf crop.  A reminder to all that the herd letter for 2009 is "W", the letter "V" is not used.

Non-THE/Online - Registry Option Temporarily Disabled
Please be advised that the “Registry” option for the Non-THE participants is not operational as of yet. Our IT department is diligently working on repairing this problem. In the interim, if there are any animals you need registered, please email
cansim@simmental.com so we can email you the Template to submit the registration details. We can then manually register them for you. Thank you for your patience and co-operation.

THE/Online - Request for Buyer Information
If there are any Online participants that have animals being held under – My Herd, My Held Papers Transfer or Print; please be advised that the option to submit a buyers name, address, city & postal code is temporarily being worked on by our IT department. In the interim, we would ask that you email this information directly to Perry or Beth. Or, use the cansim@simmental.com email address. We will then lookup the CSA # and reply to your email so you can continue with transferring the held animal using your Online system.

Do your Herd Sires have DNA?
In accordance to CSA bylaws, natural service sires must have DNA on file in order to register their progeny. So BEFORE you turn your bulls out, please make sure they have been DNA tested. If you have or will be purchasing bulls, it is your responsibility to ensure they have DNA on file.

Are you collecting semen on a bull?
AI sires must be parentage verified in order to register their progeny. If you are putting a bull into an AI facility, drawing semen on-farm, or even considering drawing semen on a bull in the future, please make sure your bull is or can be parentage verified. A good practice is to pull hair samples on your entire cow herd when they go through the chute for preg checking, vaccinations, parasite control, etc. Place the hair in an envelope and identify each envelope with tattoo or registration number. Store envelopes in a dry place out of the sun, where you will have them for future reference. If you wish to use pre-printed GenServe Laboratories hair envelopes, please call the CSA office today for a supply of them.

Percentage required for purebred status
Producers purchasing bulls from the United States or semen from American bulls should be aware of differences that exist between Canada and the United States in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status. The Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 15/16 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 7/8 Simmental as purebred. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that these bulls meet the requirement of being 15/16 Simmental if they wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred.

IGENITY HORNED/POLLED TEST NOW AVAILABLE FOR SIMMENTAL
We have been notified that Simmental has now been added to the list of breeds which can be tested under the IGENITY Horned/Polled Test. Cost of the test is $40 for the IGENITY Profile, and $50 to add the IGENITY Horned/Polled for a total of $90. All samples are processed at the GenServe (SRC) Lab in Saskatoon, with approximately 15 working days turnaround for results. For those wanting to test for information for bull sales, you are asked to submit your samples as soon as possible, as they are getting into a busy season. For breeders that profiled their herd bulls last year on the Smart Tag program, those DNA samples are on file at GenServe (SRC). If the samples have had an IGENITY Profile analysis at GenServe (SRC) within the previous year, they can request a Horned Polled test for those previously submitted samples directly with the lab.

For further information contact Lee Sinclair, Technical Sales Representative at (306) 545-0019 or (306) 537-0417, or Garth Elgie, Product Manager IGENITY at 1-888-637-4251 Ext. 6012.
