REGISTRY UPDATES
AND INFORMATION |
|
Please note the
following registry information:
THE Billing (1st installment):
A reminder to Total Herd Enrollment (THE)
participants the first installment for 2008 will be billed
to your CSA account April 1st. Payment is due upon receipt
of invoice. For members with a credit card on file at the
CSA office, fees will automatically be billed to your credit
card. The 2nd installment will be invoiced on October 1st.
Please note that in the event an animal is shipped or sold
between installment billings, the second installment is
still due and payable by the member who enrolled the cow.
Credit Card Authorization:
Please contact the CSA office if the particulars pertaining
to your credit card have changed (e.g. card number, expiry
date, etc.). This will allow your registration and transfer
papers to be printed and mailed without being delayed.
Do your Herd Sires have DNA?
Now’s the time to make sure all your natural service sires
have been DNA tested. If you have purchased any bulls
recently, it is your responsibility to ensure they have DNA
on file in accordance to CSA bylaws.
Are you collecting semen on a bull?
AI sires must be parentage verified in order to register
their progeny. If you are putting a bull into an AI
facility, drawing semen on-farm, or even considering drawing
semen on a bull in the future, please make sure your bull is
or can be parentage verified. A good practice is to pull
hair samples on your entire cow herd when they go through
the chute for preg checking, vaccinations, parasite control,
etc. Place the hair in an envelope and identify each
envelope with tattoo or registration number. Store envelopes
in a dry place out of the sun, where you will have them for
future reference. If you wish to use the pre-printed Bova-Can
Lab hair envelopes, please call the CSA office today for a
supply of them.

NEW YCSA CO-ORDINATOR |
The Canadian
Simmental Association is pleased to announce that Emily Grey
will be joining its team as YCSA Coordinator.
"I am very pleased that the CSA has been successful in
attracting a coordinator for our Junior Program with the
skill set that Emily possesses," says Bruce Holmquist,
Member/Industry Liaison for the CSA. "Her experience gained
as a member of the YCSA program will be a great addition to
the Simmental team as will her contacts within the
membership."
Emily and her family from Cookshire, Quebec have been active
in the Simmental Community since 1980, and are members of
the Quebec and Ottawa Valley Simmental Associations. Emily
currently sits on the Quebec Simmental Association board of
directors and also participates and mentors within her local
4-H club. She has represented the Young Quebec Simmental
Association at various National Classics, as well as the
Young Breeders Forum during the World Simmental Congress.
Her extensive involvement in both the YCS and 4-H programs
will be a great asset to this position and the Association.
She has been actively involved in many youth events, not
only as a participant but also as an organizer. This
knowledge and experience will be valuable in her role as
YCSA Coordinator, as she will be involved in the developing,
implementing and promoting the YCS program nationally.
"I look forward to travelling across the country to help
administer this great program as well as working with the
CSA and the YCSA boards of directors, to help develop the
true future of our industry: the youth. Most of all, I look
forward to developing new and expanding current YCSA
participation and programs," says Emily.
Emily will work out of her home based office and can be
reached by phone or e-mail at the following contacts:

CSA
MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS SURVEY RESULTS |
The Canadian
Simmental Association conducted an on-line member
communications survey last fall and winter and the results
speak to improvements made in 2007 and the areas for
enhancements in 2008.
Here are some of the survey highlights:
- On a scale
from 1 to 5 where 5 is excellent, respondents rated the CSA
4 (very good) in its member communication efforts in 2007.
- The
e-newsletter, Simmental Country and the website were listed
as the top three most effective ways to communicate with
members; meetings were noted as the least most effective
method
- 94 per cent
of the respondents read the e-newsletter on a regular basis.
When asked to provide feedback on how the e-newsletter could
be improved, comments ranged from “It is a very informative
tool and you are adding to with each addition, keep up the
great work” to feedback that more industry issues should be
covered, an interactive component would make it more
effective, not all members have e-mail and a request to use
the Simmental Country more for member information.
- When asked
about the CSA website, 53 per cent of respondents visited
each week, with 41 per cent visiting at least once a month.
-
Overwhelmingly, the top three areas of the website of most
interest to respondents were (in order): animal/member
search; on-line services; pedigree information. Industry
news and events where fourth and fifth.
- In general
people felt the website had a lot of information but when
asked what was missing, major sale results, Simmental
Country magazine articles and pedigree animal photos were
mentioned.
- When asked
what respondents liked most about the magazine, all areas
were related highly in this order: sales reports;
association news; breed improvement; and show results. 50
per cent of respondents liked all the information included
in the magazine.
- When asked
for ideas how the CSA could improve member communications,
people reiterated that the e-newsletter was great for a
quick review and should be continued and enhanced, along
with more viewpoint articles from members in Simmental
Country, more of a presence at provincial association
events, more interactive components on the website and more
direct mail
