GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES TO ALANA

For those members who have not heard, Alana has decided to leave CSA to seek other business opportunities. Alana has been a tremendous ambassador for the Simmental breed and a valuable team player within the livestock and agriculture industry. Alana’s personal decision opens a whole new chapter in her life with the purchase of a franchise operation called Glamour Secrets.  Her new 1200 square foot retail operation in NW Calgary opens this May. (www.glamoursecrets.com) Her last day at CSA will be March 31st.

For those of us who know Alana well, we are disappointed to see her leave, even though she goes with our admiration and respect for her leadership and contribution to the CSA world and the beef industry.   W
hile it will be a challenge to replace Alana, we have started that process.  If you know of anyone who may be qualified and who would continue to build on the great work Alana has done, please encourage them to apply.  An overview of the position is now posted on our website at:  http://www.simmental.com/PRmarketingad.shtml

REGIONAL SALES REP POSITION AVAILABLE

The Canadian Simmental Association is seeking a dynamic and personable professional to sell to cattle producers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan the benefits of advertising in its two premiere publications: Simmental Country (six issues/yr) and Commercial Country (two issues/yr). A perfect fit would be someone with at least two or three years relevant experience. They would reside in the region, know the countryside, handle themselves well and feel comfortable in cattle circles, and have exemplary interpersonal and customer service skills. They would also have the ability to set and meet budget targets, network effectively and be a positive and knowledgeable ambassador for the association. Primary responsiblities would be servicing existing accounts in the two provinces with some sales and trade show travel occasionally required to other areas of the country since these are national publications. This position would be a key liaison with magazine production staff and one other sales representative. Photography skills and a flair for advising clients on marketing and ad development concepts would be highly desirable. Remuneration will be on a commission basis. Any interested self-starters with a passion for face-to-face sales should send their resume, cover letter and commission expectations by March 20, 2007 to:

CSA PROGENCY TEST PROGRAM UPDATE

2006-08 calves are hitting the ground now at Roseburn Ranches, and we are excited and looking forward to how they turn out. Bulls tested on the 06-08 program include YR Red Brick 7K, LRX Black Buster 23N, and Lchmn Bodybuilder 7303F (Benchmark Sire).

The CSA program currently has eight bulls enrolled for the 2007-09 section of the program and we are looking forward to the upcoming breeding season.

The Progeny Test Program will provide an invaluable source of carcass data for Simmental breeders which, when combined with our growing ultrasound database, will help position members to target the commercial industry with their genetics.

IMPORTANT REGISTRY INFORMATION
THE Billing (1st installment): Just a reminder to Total Herd Enrollment (THE) participants that the first installment billing is fast approaching. Enrollment fees will be invoiced April 1st. For members with a credit card on file at the CSA office, fees will automatically be billed to your credit card.

Credit Card Authorization: Please contact the CSA office if the particulars pertaining to your credit card have changed (e.g. card number, expiry date, etc.). This will allow your registration and transfer papers to be printed and mailed without being delayed.

Do your Herd Sires have DNA? Now’s the time to make sure all your natural service sires have been DNA tested. If you have purchased any bulls recently, it is your responsibility to ensure they have DNA on file in accordance to CSA bylaws.

Are you collecting semen on a bull? AI sires must be parentage verified in order to register their progeny. If you are putting a bull into an AI facility, drawing semen on-farm, or even considering drawing semen on a bull down the road, please make sure your bull is or can be parentage verified. By “can be”, do both the sire and dam have DNA on file?? A good practice is to pull hair on your cow herd when they go through the chute. Place the hair in an envelope and identify each envelope with tattoo or registration number. Store envelopes in a dry place out of the sun, where you will have them for future reference.

MARKETING REPORT

Bull sales are in full swing and once again Simmental bulls are bringing top dollar. Congratulations to all Simmental breeders for providing the commercial industry with the right type of Simmental genetics to work in their programs. A tip for all bull sellers: Be sure to follow-up with all of your bull buyers with a personal thank-you, either a note, a phone call or perhaps a gift subscription to the Simmental Country. Personal follow-up with your customers allows you the opportunity to show your appreciation to them as well as potentially learn more about them and their program. Remember the cattle business is a people business!
